a day in sf part 2: fort funston

Here are the pictures from Kika’s doggy day of fun! We ambled on over after our brunch at Squat and Gobble. I switched out my coat and boots for a long cardigan and sneakers. This was our first time going to Fort Funston up in San Francisco, which is a giant off-leash dog park and beach area and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and Parks Conservancy. Fort Funston was formally a military outpost and two-gun battery in the mid-20th Century and you can actually see the remains of the battery up close. That was more of an interest to the bf than me or Kika, but hey, history is cool :) There were great rolling sand dunes, cliffs, beach access and hiking trails for bikers, hikers and dog owners alike.
Kika has visited a few dog beaches in San Diego, including our trip to Fiesta Island in February. I’ve been wanting to take her to another large off-leash dog area since moving up to the Bay Area and Fort Funston was it! There were off-leash dogs everywhere and you could just feel their energy and freedom. The number of dogs almost outnumbered the people there, but I didn’t see any dog confrontations at all. They were all too busy sniffing and exploring and running around to bother other dogs, which is great for a dominant dog like our shiba. Kika stayed on-leash for the most part because the bf’s overly cautious, but we did let her off leash when we were down on the doggy beach. It was flanked by the cliffs and far away from the roads and parking lot, so Kika was safe to roam off-leash in what we felt was a protected area. She was so happy trotting up and down the beach, and we let her get away with her selective hearing skills. ;) At the end of the day, her face was covered in sand and drool, which I think means a day well spent in her book! Hooray!
